Do's
- Trim your nails when they get too long, and cut them when they are too long for you. If you don't cut them they can tear or get caught in things, or even worse, scratch you.
- Take special care of your toenails. Trim your toenails in a straight line and not in a curved manner. Inappropriate toenail cutting, toe injuries and even ill-fitting footwear can result in your toenails splitting at the corners which can result in ingrowing toenails.
- A good diet is important for healthy nails. Fragile nails can be caused by iron deficiency. By eating foods rich in iron helps keep your nails healthy. Also include foods rich in calcium in your daily diet.
- Make your nails strong by dipping your nails in lukewarm mustard oil as for 8-10 minutes, then rub each nail slowly for blood circulation. This really needs to be done every day.
- Clean your nails by soaking your nails in 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice in a cup of water for a couple of minutes, clean your nails thoroughly with hot water and then use a moisturizer. This also helps get rid of stains.
- Massage your nails for firm and radiant nails using a cotton ball dipped in fresh lemon juice and rinse them.
Don'ts
- Don't bite your nails! Biting your nails is bad for your teeth as well as your nails. Try and keep your fingers out of your mouth even if you don't bite your nails as saliva has nail weakening enzymes.
- Don't use dirty implements. Wash your clippers, scissors, dirt scraper and nail brush after every use so you don't put dirt back on your nails.
- Don't pick at or peel off your polish when it starts to get chipped instead of removing it with nail polish remover as this can remove the actual top layer of your nail bed and weaken the nail.
- Don't pick or gnaw your cuticles which will make them dry and ragged and make them vulnerable to infection. If you wish to push back your cuticles try using a topical solution such as a cuticle softener instead of scissors, hands or teeth. Cuticle removers can remove dead skin without damaging the healthy nail bed and cuticle.
- Don't wear nail polish for weeks on end as this will dry out your nails. Remove your nail polish when it starts chipping, which should be done after two or three weeks to give your nails a chance to breathe.
- Don't use your nails to peel or scrape off labels as this can break your nails. Use a tool instead!
